First 15 mins of similar film - Reservoir dogs

Reservoir dogs- First 15 minutes

Mise en scene

At the start of the scene there is a table full of men having a conversation. All the characters are dressed in same black suit and tie apart from two people which may indicate that they are outsiders in the group. The fact that they are all dressed similar indicates there in some sort of group and organisation and two of them don't really belong there. All of them leave a tip apart from one of them which gives the audience an insight of the characters personality.

Editing

When they leave the café you can see all the characters clearly as its edited in slow motion to show how the characters differ and their characteristics. It also gives the audience an insight into their personalities.

Sound

The sound at the start of the film are non-diegetic sound such as plates, glasses and cutlery to establish where the scene is set, which is in a café. When they leave the café there is a slow tempo with upbeat music to emphasise the characters coolness and composure. The music matches the walk of the characters to show how the characters are composed.

Cinematography

In the opening scene they are all sat around a table and the camera shifts round the table to each character to give the audience an indication of the characters personalities and characteristics. For example, it shows that Harvey is the leader and has authority over the rest of the group and is very confident when speaking.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Plot: Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.

Mise en scene- The film is set in wintry conditions with a lot of fires to show that there are very rural areas. The clothes worn in the districts are very tattered and look to be made from rags, whereas the uniforms worn by the guards look really modern.

Editing: When the camera is on the people in the district who are very poor there is more of a blue tint to show that its very cold, whereas when its on the richer people there is a strong orange glow to show they are in and can afford warmth.

Sound: The music is quite calm for the majority but when there is some action, the music fades out to let more diagetic sounds come through e.g. screaming.

Cinematography- The camera focuses a lot on close ups of various people to show facial expressions. The camera seems to look up to katniss and peeta to show they have dominance and that people look up to them, but seems to look down on the crowd to show they have no authority.

15 min analysis of similar film - part 1

Chosen Analysis Film: Inception
Storyline (source, IMDb):
Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

Notes on storyline:
Sci-Fi like theme to story with idea of thief in peoples minds stealing information, this has made him a wanted person. - Like having the information made our character a wanted person.
Offer of redemption creates a change in the plot of the story making it more interesting instead of the usual predictable, 'character on run from the law'.
From the storyline it appears there is some sort of tension created with the idea of an impossible mission.

Main characters (source, IMDb):
Dominic Cob (Leonardo DiCaprio)
Cobb is an extractor - he enters people's dreams, steals their secrets, and sells them to their competitors. His totem is a spinning top that belonged to his late wife. When in dreams, it spins forever, never toppling over.

Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
Arthur is Cobb's right hand man, and apparently closest friend. They have known each other since before the tragic death of Cobb's wife. He lives in America, but travels the world with Cobb. Arthur and Cobb used to work with Eames, but Arthur and Eames appear to dislike each other now.

Ariadne (Ellen Page)
Ariadne is a student of architecture in France. She meets Cobb through one of her teachers, who is Cobb's father-in-law. After a few tests, she is brought into the team as their official Architect. At first she is adverse to dream sharing but can't stay away from the freedom that comes from it.

Character comments:

Dominic Cobb - Main character that is the base of the story. The iconography of the spinning top portrays unease and disorientation which is linked to the theme of the film.

Arthur -  Main characters friend and apparently closest friend. History of friends, bound by a tragic event. close because he travels with Cobb.

Ariadne - Student of architecture in France shows she has knowledge.  At first she is adverse to dream sharing but can't stay away from the freedom that comes from it.

Research into certificate of film

Our idea for our film will contain violence and some 'strong language' so should be around a 12A.

The guidance of a 12A states that The overall tone of a film or DVD, and the way it makes the audience feel may affect the classification. For example, a work which has a very dark or unsettling tone which could disturb the audience would be less likely to be passed 12A even if the individual issues in the film were considered acceptable under the BBFC guidelines. Similarly, if a work is particularly positive or reassuring this may stop it being pushed up a category from 12A to 15.

As for language the BBFC's Guidelines state:
That there may be strong language (eg 'f***') at 12 or 12A, but it must be infrequent. The context of the strong language is important. Aggressive uses of strong language may result in a film or DVD being placed at the 15 category. There is some allowance for puns on strong language at this category.
There may be moderate language (eg uses of terms such as ‘bitch’ and ‘twat’ at 12 or 12A).
Any discriminatory language will not be endorsed by the work as a whole. Aggressive discriminatory language (for example homophobic or racist terms) is unlikely to be passed at 12 or 12A unless it is clearly condemned.
Dangerous behaviour such as hanging, suicide and self-harming may be present in 12 or 12A works but will not dwell on detail which could be copied or present those activities as pain or harm free.
Discriminatory behaviour should not be endorsed by the film as a whole.
There may be infrequent sight of drugs misuse in a 12 or a 12A but the portrayal should not be glamorised or provide instructional details.
